Hey, I'm Colette! 👋
I'm a first time mum from Bonnie Scotland! I'm also mum to my beautiful daughter, Dorothea, who recently turned one year old and somehow manages to be the sweetest little person and the baby boss of chaos at the same time. Yes like the 'Boss Baby' movie — suit, tie and all (if you haven't seen it, it's worth a watch). 😂
If you've ever wondered how Little Life Finds came to life, it all started in a place I never expected...
In a hospital room with a very boring piece of paper.
👶 The Newborn Days
When Dorothea was born, I was handed a chart by the hospital staff to record her feeds, nappies and general wellbeing.
As a brand new mum, I quickly realised how important it was. After all, when you're functioning on very little sleep, remembering whether your baby had a bottle thirty minutes ago or three hours ago becomes pretty difficult.
The chart was very useful.
But every time I looked at it, I couldn't help thinking:
"This is so boring."
Now don't get me wrong — it did exactly what it was supposed to do. But as someone who's always loved creativity, colours and design, it felt more like filling out paperwork than recording precious memories from my daughter's first days.
And that's when the idea first began.
🎨 Surely This Could Be Cuter?
Once we got home, I found myself staring at that chart again. Then I opened my laptop. I redesigned it.
Nothing fancy at first. Just softer colours. A nicer layout. Cute illustrations. Something that made me smile instead of sigh.
And something funny happened — I actually wanted to use it.
Instead of feeling like another task on my never-ending new-mum to-do list, it felt special. I wasn't just tracking feeds and nappies anymore. I was documenting part of Dorothea's story.
And that's when I realised something important:
Good design can make even the most ordinary parenting tasks feel a little more enjoyable.
✅ Parenting Is Basically One Long Checklist
As the months passed, I realised parenting is one giant series of milestones.
You start by tracking milk. Then nappies. Then sleep. Then tummy time. Then first smiles. Then first giggles. Then first words. Then first steps.
Then suddenly you're Googling whether it's normal for your toddler to watch themselves having a temper tantrum in the mirror (I think they love it really — little acting stars they are). 😂
The more Dorothea grew, the more I started thinking about all the skills she would need to learn. You can see how she is doing on our TikTok!
Kindness. Patience. Confidence. Good manners. Independence. Responsibility. The ability to tidy up her toys (still working on that one — wish me luck).
And I wanted learning those things to be fun.
⚠️ The "Terrible Twos" Warning
As cute as she was as a newborn, friends, family and complete strangers all seemed to have one thing to tell me... (ground starting to shake).
"Just wait until the terrible twos."
Honestly, they said it so often that I started wondering if there should be a critical news warning — like a "Take shelter, earthquake arrival!" moment. Headlines being:
⚠️ Severe Toddler Conditions Expected.
⚠️ High Risk of Tantrums.
⚠️ Flying Snacks Possible.
Apparently, somewhere between babyhood and childhood, children discover a magical ability to become upset because:
- Their banana broke in half. (audience going "aww")
- The toy in the shop costs more than your weekly shop and you say the word "no".
- Suddenly while watching Mrs Rachel they don't like something.
- To round it up — even the fact of the moon existing. 😅
I knew those moments would come eventually. But I also knew something else.
Children learn best when they're engaged. They love earning rewards. They love seeing progress. And they absolutely love being praised for doing something well.
That's when the bigger vision for Little Life Finds started taking shape. 🥳
🌈 Creating Resources Children Actually Want To Use
I wanted to create products that didn't feel boring.
I wanted colourful reward charts. Beautiful milestone trackers. Educational posters that looked good in a nursery or classroom. Routine charts children could actually get excited about. Resources that made children feel proud of their achievements. And resources that helped parents stay organised without needing seventeen different notebooks scattered around the house.
Because let's be honest... parenting already comes with enough chaos.
If a colourful chart can help make bedtime smoother or encourage a child to brush their teeth without a twenty-minute negotiation, that's a win. 🏅
🏫 Then I Realised It Wasn't Just Parents
Initially, everything I designed was for me. Then I started talking to other parents. Then my friends that are teachers. Then my childminder.
And I quickly realised something — everyone was looking for similar things.
- Teachers wanted engaging classroom resources.
- Childminders wanted positive reward systems.
- Parents wanted ways to encourage routines and independence.
- Nurseries wanted educational displays that children would actually notice.
- And all of them wanted resources that looked modern, cheerful and fun.
That's when Little Life Finds evolved from a personal project into something much bigger. 😃
💛 Why I Chose The Name Little Life Finds
The name Little Life Finds came from the idea that childhood is full of discoveries. Every day children are learning something new — a new word, a new skill, a new achievement, a new milestone. They're constantly finding little pieces of the world around them.
And as parents, teachers and caregivers, we're there to celebrate those moments.
Sometimes it's a huge achievement. Sometimes it's simply remembering to put shoes on the correct feet. Both deserve recognition. ❤️
For example — if Dorothea lets me change her nappy without moving around like a fast chipmunk, I say "Well done" and clap my hands, then show her the sticker and put it on the chart. She now claps her hands when I put the sticker on the chart! 🥹
These are also smart, peaceful techniques to use so your child is happy!
